About Us

The Orpheus Choir of Toronto has earned a reputation as “one of Toronto's most distinguished and important choirs” (Larry Beckwith, WholeNote Magazine).

Under the artistic leadership of Robert Cooper, the sixty-voice ensemble has been revitalized and offers a sumptuous entertainment experience, in keeping with its mandate to celebrate life through the discovery and performance of fine choral music.

Now in his seventh season as Artistic Director, Robert Cooper’s tenure has been marked by premieres of new works and innovative programming, attracting both a growing number of singers to the choir and increased audiences to the concerts.

In addition to new works by old composers, the Orpheus Choir is noted for performing adventuresome works outside the mainstream choral repertoire: Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace; Sir Paul McCartney’s Ecce Cor Meum; premieres by Canadian composers, such as Allan Bevan’s Nou Goth Sonne under Wode ; Derek Holman’s Requiem , Christos Hatzis’ Sepulchre of Life and John Estacio’s The Houses Stand Not Far Apart, as well as many new international choral voices. When one includes guest conductor appearances by John Rutter and Sir David Willcocks, Orpheus performances aptly justify the choir’s brand, “expect something different!”

Comprised of 60 dedicated singers, the Orpheus Choir includes members from across the GTA and beyond. Gwen Brown, a long-standing alto member of the choir, says “after a lifetime of choral singing, including over 30 years with the Orpheus Choir, I still look forward to weekly rehearsals and quarterly concerts as special times. There is something about coming together with other choral enthusiasts to make music which lifts the spirit and nourishes the soul.”

Now in its 45th season, Orpheus continues to offer an exciting and adventuresome repertoire, unique collaborations with other arts organizations and a passionate evening of choral art. All music lovers will be thrilled to attend a concert performance by the Orpheus Choir of Toronto.

Come hear us sing and “Expect Something Different!”
